Every Problem Is an Opportunity to Trust God - 28 May 2015

Every Problem Is an Opportunity to Trust God

I have noticed that people, (including me), often speak about problems in our lives, but the majority of the time the problems are short lived. This means that what we may see as a problem today will not be a problem tomorrow. Sometimes we simply wait to see what tomorrow brings, while in other instances the problem simply fades away and loses its importance.

When we seek to trust God to solve our problems, I think one of the key questions to ask ourselves is whether the problem is truly a problem or just an irritation that life brings. We may believe we have a problem with a co-worker, but tomorrow is another day and the goal is to do our job with a minimum of conflict.  Let’s face it, people can be irritating, especially in circumstances that add pressure and stress to what otherwise would be a normal day. Maybe they are not the problem, but instead our perspective is different because of difficult circumstances.

We need to trust God on a daily basis, for He is the one who makes our life possible. Some people may look at life as a continual problem or a series of problems. Often we trust God without even knowing it. Just as often, we have problems that we do not see as problems. So yes, every day and every problem is another reason to trust God.  Isaiah 26:4 states, “Trust ye in the Lord for ever:  for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” (KJV)

Perhaps the greatest test of trusting God lies with problems that have a long duration. Dealing with a chronic illness, adjusting to the loss of a loved one through death or divorce, or becoming depressed due to loss of a job or your home, are examples where trusting God can be challenging and rewarding at the same time.

One of the problems with being human is that there is too often the perception that every problem has a solution. It seems that by definition, if a problem does not have a solution it is not really a problem. Yet the above examples are situations where hope is of more importance than an answer.  I have been taught and I have learned through life experiences, that trusting God is not a one time choice, but a way of life that I must practice and live everyday. Some of the best examples of faith are linked to people who have suffered greatly over many years, even a lifetime, without a solution ever being delivered to them.

This reality should not deter anyone from reaching out and trusting God for their day-to-day problems. I have learned that trusting God with short term problems is a training course to strengthen our faith and trust in God; to move forward to greater challenges God has prepared for us. Sometimes the opportunity to trust God allows a small problem to be solved because there is a larger one that needs our attention. There are many possibilities, but they all begin with trusting God for every problem, large or small.

It has been said that opportunity knocks once, but temptation hangs on the doorbell. Applied to our problems, it seems obvious we will always have problems either because we create them ourselves or they are brought into our lives from outside sources. Like temptation, problems will almost always be in our life. Instead of making the mistake and answering the doorbell, it is better to give God a call and let Him answer the door. He knows who and what is on the other side of that door.

Let us all walk in the joy of the Lord, and remember to love Him and place our trust in Him.  We are given an opportunity to do so daily.
